THE HEART OF AFRICA RETURNS TO THE WORLD CUP

Fifty-two years. That is how long the football world waited to see the Democratic Republic of the Congo back on the biggest stage. For generations of Congolese supporters, the 2026 FIFA World Cup was more than a tournament—it was a return to where our nation belongs.

The Heart of Africa is beating again.

When the Leopards arrived in North America, many viewed them as outsiders. They left having earned the respect of the football world. DR Congo advanced from a demanding group featuring Portugal, Colombia and Uzbekistan, recording the nation's first-ever FIFA World Cup victory and reaching the knockout stage for the first time in history.

This campaign also erased painful memories from 1974. Back then, as Zaire, our country became the first sub-Saharan African nation to reach a FIFA World Cup, but left under the shadow of three defeats and years of unfair stereotypes. The Leopards of 2026 returned with a different mission: to rewrite history. And they did.

The tournament produced unforgettable heroes. Yoane Wissa became DR Congo's all-time leading FIFA World Cup goalscorer and scored the nation's first-ever World Cup goal. Fiston Mayele delivered one of the defining moments of the tournament with his decisive strike against Uzbekistan, while Lionel Mpasi produced world-class performances in goal that kept the Leopards fighting until the very end.

Then came England. Few expected DR Congo to challenge one of football's giants. Yet the Leopards led for more than an hour and came within minutes of producing one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history before Harry Kane's late goals secured a 2–1 victory for England. Even in defeat, DR Congo walked off the pitch with heads held high. Coach Sébastien Desabre said the team had left "a positive image" of Congolese football for the world to see.

This World Cup was also part of a historic moment for African football. Nine of the continent's ten representatives reached the knockout stage, proving that African nations are no longer just participants—they are genuine contenders on football's biggest stage. DR Congo proudly stood among them.

For us, this is not the end of a tournament. It is the beginning of a new era.
