Today We Celebrate Our Independence Day

To My Dear Fellow Congolese Compatriots,

I am moved to write these words as I reflect on my heritage and my enduring connection to our beloved homeland.

Sixty-six years ago, my great-uncle, Patrice Emery Lumumba, sat down at his desk to pen one of the most memorable speeches in our nation's history. In my own humble way, I find myself repeating history. While my position is not as grand as that of an elected official, I proudly hold a title that belongs to every son and daughter of our nation, I am "Congolais".

Today, we have been brought together by a beautiful game that unites the world and reminds us of our shared humanity. Football has the remarkable power to transcend borders, languages, and differences, allowing us to stand together as one people.

As we celebrate our Independence Day, let us seize the promise that freedom brings. Each of us has the ability to make a difference, no matter how great or small our contribution may seem. My father, Papa Kamana, always reminded me, "Do what we can." Those simple words carry a profound truth: even with little, you can still accomplish something meaningful.

As our beloved Leopards prepare to face what many would argue is one of the greatest football powers the world has ever seen, let the world witness what a mother is capable of. And if you had ever known my own mother, Mama Sophie, you would understand why I believe that same strength, resilience, compassion, and determination live within the mother we all share - Mama Congo.

May her children rise together with courage.

May her spirit echo through every cheer.

May her strength be seen by the world.

And may we never forget that when Congolese stand united, there is no challenge too great and no dream beyond our reach.

Happy Independence Day to all my fellow Congolais around the world!
